About the Church

The Catholics of Khadki (formerly known as Kirkee) were first visited by The Fr. Conceicao of the City Chapel under Padroado, who came from Poona to offer Holy Mass on Sundays. Under his supervision, a small chapel was erected in 1833 with the contributions by the soldiers and civilians but it was repaired by the government and became government property.

Fr. Leitao, a Goan priest, became the Military Chaplain of Kirkee in 1847. A monthly visit from Kirkee to the military station at Satara used to be made until 1861, when a separate Chaplain was appointed there.

A proposal to build a new chapel at Kirkee was made, but the scheme was held up due to the Mutiny in 1857. In 1865, the old chapel because of its dilapidated condition had to be abandoned and Mass was said in a barrack room.

The scheme for the New Chapel was revived and the government granted an amount of Rs. 10,978/-. However, just at that time, the Anglicans built a new Church and abandoned their old one and it was proposed to hand over the structure to the Catholics with a grant of Rs. 12,000/- for necessary alterations and repairs. The modifications were made and the remodeled St. Ignatius Church was blessed on June 23, 1876. The Vicar Apostolic built a priest's house behind the Church in 1876 and a soldiers' institute was built in1883. A small school for the Tamil speaking community was conducted in the Parish.

On 23-01-1876, this church was dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola by Bishop Meurin, and on 20 -08-1992 was rededicated by Bishop Valerian. Fr. John Lauder SJ had the longest tenure as parish priest for 36 years. Rt. Rev. Valerian D'Souza, Bishop of Poona, rededicated the St. Ignatius Church in 1992 after the renovation of the whole interior.

The Mylapore Sisters took over the St. Joseph's Convent School run by the Congregation of Carmelites Religious (CCR) from the former Tamil medium school in the year 1950. St. Joseph's Convent School (co-education) was then bifurcated into an exclusive girl's school in the year 1963 and the girls' section was moved to a new location close by.

The St. Joseph's Boys' High School was started in 1963 by Rev. Fr. Manuel Mascarenhas as Principal in order to cater to the needy children of the parish. He built the new school building and the School Hall in 1969. The extension work was done by Rev. Fr. Nelson Machado. Kindergarten school has started in the year 1980. The Christian Workers Movement (CWM) started a non-formal education and recreation center for working youth in the parish. The renovation of the Church, the Church roof, new permanent Altar, new sound system, and painting of the Church was done in the year 2022.
